The Minster and Cliffords Tower

York's skyline is dominated by the spectacular Minster, one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals with foundations in England's earliest history. Across the city is Clifford's Tower, a proud symbol of England's medieval kings and built by the Norman William the Conqueror to subdue the proud and rebellious people of the north. We recommend you visit both.

Romans and Vikings

1,000 years ago York was a thriving Viking trading city, 'Jorvik'. Discover the sights, sounds and smells of the Viking city at the excellent Jorvik Viking Centre. In 71AD the current city was founded by the Roman's as 'Eboracum'. Visit the Yorkshire Museum to learn about the Romans and the story of how York developed to the current medieval splendour through fantastic interactive galleries and AV shows.

Medieval Walls and Streets

Discover York's wonderful walls and streets, and the amazing buildings within. Marvel at the Georgian townhouse interior of Fairfax House or explore Merchant Adventurers Hall, the best preserved guild hall in Europe. Experience medieval household life in the Barley Hall or visit one of the most haunted houses in England, the Treasurer's House. And don't forget to visit The Shambles, one of the best preserved Medieval streets in existence.

Shopping, Cafes and Restaurants

With designer labels, high street names, independent shops and boutique shops selling vintage, York will satisfy the most demanding shopper. Coupled with world-class food and drink on offer, visiting York is always a memorable experience. Enjoy cafes, fine dining, pubs and restaurants and the food markets at Newgate and on Parliament Street. And don't forget to eat chocolate - York is England's chocolate capital.
